CAVITIES(DENTAL DECAY) AND ITS TREATMENT.

HI EVRYBDY!!!

What Are Cavities OR DENTAL DECAY 0R CARIES?
A cavity is a decay in your tooth. A cavity develops when a tooth decays and develops a hole that grows bigger and deeper over time. Everyone is susceptible to tooth decay.
If a cavity is large and deep, food particles can become trapped in it.
Cavities are also called dental caries.
Symptoms of Cavities
The most common symptom is a toothache.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay is heavily influenced by what we eat, how well we take care of our teeth, and the presence of fluoride in our water and toothpaste. Heredity also plays a role in tooth decay.

What is a Filling?

1) A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by
decay back to its normal function and shape. When a dentist gives you a filling, he or she first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.

By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. Materials used for fillings include gold, porcelain, a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc).

Which Type of Filling is Best?
No one type of filling is best for everyone. What's right for you will be determined by
$   The extent of the repair,
$   Whether you have allergies to certain materials,
$  Where in your mouth the filling is needed, and the cost.

Considerations for different materials include:

NO.1 AMALGAM(SILVER COLOUR) FILLING AND NO.2 COMPOSIT FILLING
  1) Composite (plastic) resins OR TOOTH COLOURED FILLING are matched to be the same color as your teeth and therefore used where a natural appearance is desired. The ingredients are mixed and placed directly into the cavity, where they harden. Composites may not be the ideal material for large fillings as they may chip or wear over time. They can also become stained from coffee, tea or tobacco, and do not last as long as other types of fillings generally from three to 10 years.
·         As there is advancement in technology now high strength posterior materials available in market and tyey are used frequently by dentists(MOST COMMONLY USED)

·
·        2)Glass ionomer cement
A self-hardening mixture of glass and inorganic acid.
Usually used for small fillings, crowns, liners and temporary restorations.
Advantages: releases fluoride (may provide help against further decay), completed in one visit, low incidence of producing tooth sensitivity, good esthetics.
Disadvantages: Cost is similar to Composite resin, not recommended for biting surfaces and permanent teeth, could increase chance of periodontal disease(SECOND MOST COMMONLY USED)
·
·         3) Amalgam (silver) fillings are resistant to wear and relatively inexpensive. However, due to their dark color, they are more noticeable than porcelain or composite restorations and are not usually used in very visible areas, such as front teeth.Very good retention in posterior teeth
4) 4) Gold fillings(NOT MUCH USED) 5) PORCELIN FILLING
·       If decay or a fracture has damaged a large portion of the tooth, a crown, or cap, may be recommended. Decay that has reached the nerve may be treated in two ways: through root canal therapy (in which nerve damaged nerve is removed) or through a procedure called pulp capping (which attempts to keep the nerve alive).

What Happens When You get a Filling?
If your dentist decides to fill a cavity, he or she will first remove the decay and clean the affected area. The cleaned-out cavity will then be filled with any of the variety of materials described above.

How Do I Know if I Need a Filling?
Only your dentist can detect whether you have a cavity that needs to be filled. During a checkup, your dentist will use a small mirror to examine the surfaces of each tooth.

7  Ways to Prevent Cavities

1. Brush Your Teeth

In the fight against cavities, it is essential that you brush your teeth properly at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride.

2. Floss Daily

Food debris gets caught in between our teeth when we eat. If the debris is not removed, it can lead to cavities. Flossingeveryday is the best way to remove food debris from in between the teeth.

3. Eat Healthy

Proper nutrition plays an important role in good dental health. Eating nutritional snacks and limiting the amount of sugary drinks will help to prevent plaque from forming on the teeth.

4. Visit Your Dentist

Many cavities can only be detected by a dentist or a dental X-ray. Visiting your dentist for regular check ups and cleaningsare a key factor in preventing cavities and staying on top of good oral hygiene.

5. Have Sealants Placed

Dental sealants are a protective coating that is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant protects the tooth from getting a cavity by shielding against bacteria and plaque. Sealants are more common in children because of the new growth of permanent teeth, however, sealants can benefit adults to.

6. Use a Mouthrinse

There are several antimicrobial mouth rinses on the market that have been clinically proven to reduce plaque, such as Listerine or Crest Pro Health. Rinsing with one of these mouth rinses after brushing or eating can aid in cavity prevention.

7. Chew (Sugarless) Gum!

Believe it or not, chewing certain sugarless gums can actually help to prevent cavities by increasing the flow of saliva in your mouth. In 2007, the American Dental Association awarded their Seal of Acceptance to Wrigley's Orbit, Eclipse and Extra chewing gums for helping to prevent cavities.
